Kabul is the capital and the largest city in Afghanistan. It is also part of the larger Kabul province, as one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan. Kabul urban area has an estimated population of about 5 million (the total population of Afghanistan is around 35.5 million). Kabul is located at around 1800 meters above sea level.

Ahmad Shah Massoud, called the "Lion of Panjshir", was an Afghan politician and guerilla commander during the resistance against the Soviet occupation between 1979 and 1989. After the Taliban takeover he was the leading opposition commander. He was assassinated in 2001.
