143100 square km. Estimated population of 8.7 million people. Most of Tajikistan's inhabitants belong to the Tajik ethnic group, who speak Tajik (a dialect of Persian). Many also speak Russian as their second language.
GBAO: The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Located in the Pamir Mountains. GBAO makes up 45% of the land area of Tajikistan but only 3% of its population. A special permit is required to enter GBAO.Bulunkul village (3924 m)
The Bulunkul village. The climate in the Bulunkul area is very dry and the village is surrounded by a stone desert. A fresh water lake makes life possible here. Bulunkul is the coldest inhabited place in Central Asia with its -63 C degrees measured in winter. The people here make a living from fishing and livestock. However, the nearby Bulunkul lake is shrinking and is getting smaller and smaller. The Bulunkul lake is further to the left.
Vichkut village. Chorchanbe homestay
A room in a typical pamiri house. There is a raised platform (about 50cm) around the inside walls of the house. This is used for both sitting (while eating etc.) and sleeping. The roof has a skylight, the design of which incorporates four concentric square box-type layers known as 'chorkhona' ('four houses').
